Au mois d’août j’ai travaillé sur trois tableaux, un abstrait et deux figuratifs. Ils ne sont pas terminés. Je les présente dans leur état actuel.

1) En lien avec l’article du mois dernier, « Veille feuille de tôle » est un tableau de 2018 que j’ai retravaillé cet été. Il se voulait à l’origine une maquette d’un projet de peinture sur une veille tôle. Je me demandais alors comment je pourrais utiliser ces surfaces ondulées et rouillées comme support. J’avais imaginé une énumération d’énoncés logiques superposée sur des rayures représentant la tôle. Depuis j’ai abandonné cette idée. Les veilles tôles sont imprégnées d’une âme et d’une beauté que la nature a façonnées.  Mon projet, si je le réalise, serait de mettre en valeur les montrer dans une présentation qui les mettrait en valeur.

2) Le deuxième est un autoportrait de couleur chocolat.  Il est fait dans le style du Grand nu rouge de Marco Del Rey. J’ai immédiatement aimé ce Grand nu lorsque je l’ai vu à Saint-Émilion, vers 2010, sur une affiche qui annonçait une exposition de la Galerie Maeght.

J’ai eu la mauvaise idée de réutiliser une toile qui portait un motif texturé. La peinture n’est pas lisse et donne un effet boutonneux à l’ensemble. Je devrai le refaire ce qui ne m’indispose pas trop car la pose, les proportions et les couleurs me plaisent. Je pourrai les reproduire avec facilité.

3) Le troisième est aussi lié à un souvenir de voyage. En 2016 nous avons fait une longue randonnée sur la South West Coast Path, de Padstow à Penzance. Il n’était pas rare d’y voir parfois des bovins, d’autres fois des chevaux, paître paisiblement sur la falaise longeant la mer. Ils étaient là, sans clos apparent, humant comme nous la brise marine. J’ai déjà peint un tableau sur ce thème; il représentait des vaches. Dessiner l’allure fière et dynamique des chevaux est un plus grand défi. Ce tableau-ci est avancé mais pas terminé.

In August I worked on three paintings, one abstract and two figurative. They are not finished. I present them as they are today.

1) In connection with last month’s article, « Veille feuille de tôle » is a painting from 2018 that I reworked this summer. It was originally intended as a mock-up of what I was thinking of painting on an old sheet of metal. In fact, in 2018 I was wondering how I could use these corrugated and rusty surfaces as a support. I had imagined an enumeration of logical statements superimposed on stripes representing the metal sheet. I have since abandoned the idea. Old metal sheets are infused with a soul and beauty that nature has shaped. My plan, if I go ahead with it, will be to show them in a way that highlights their value.

2) The second is a chocolate-coloured self-portrait. It’s in the style of Marco Del Rey’s Grand nu rouge. I immediately liked this Grand nu when I saw it in Saint-Émilion, around 2010, on a poster advertising an exhibition by the Gallery Maeght.
I had the bad idea of re-using a canvas with a textured motif. The paint isn’t smooth and gives the whole thing a pimply effect. I’ll have to do it again, which doesn’t bother me too much because I like the pose, the proportions and the colours. I’ll be able to reproduce them with ease.

3) The third is also linked to a travel memory. In 2016 we did a long trek along the South West Coast Path, from Padstow to Penzance. It was not uncommon to see cattle, and sometimes horses, grazing peacefully on the cliffs alongside the sea. They were there, seemingly unenclosed, sniffing the sea breeze like us. I once painted a picture on this theme, of cows. Drawing the proud, dynamic look of horses is a bigger challenge. This painting is advanced but not finished.
