Question : Vous nous présentez ici un morceau de tôle. Plusieurs comprendront que vous voulez communiquer un sentiment de nostalgie. Pouvez-vous nous expliquer comment cette pièce s’insère dans votre corpus d’œuvres ?

Moi : En effet c’est un morceau de tôle provenant d’un ancien bâtiment sis dans la forêt laurentienne. Il porte l’empreinte des hommes qui l’ont manufacturé, puis cloué et décloué à maintes reprises. Il porte aussi l’histoire de son rapport au temps et à la nature qui l’ont transformée en lui donnant un bosselage et des couleurs magnifiques. Je l’ai choisi comme œuvre représentative de mon approche de simplification et de sobriété de moyens pour faire une œuvre picturale.

Question : Vous évoquez la beauté de l’imperfection, la force de la nature et le passage du temps. Mais par quel argument arrivez-vous à considérer cet objet comme œuvre d’art ?

Moi : D’abord, mon intention est claire. Je présente ici une œuvre qui a des qualités esthétiques inimitables et je propose une réflexion sur la force créatrice de la nature.  
L’agent de réalisation ici est la nature qui, comme une alchimiste, a transformé un objet métallique industriel en ses composants originaux extraits de la terre. Sur plusieurs décennies, les éléments, le soleil, la pluie et la neige ont créé ces ocres et ces bruns. La forêt, les arbres qui tombent et les branches qui cassent, sont à l’origine du bosselage. Pour ce tableau, j’abandonne mes ambitions de peintre et je m’incline devant la force créatrice de la nature.
Enfant, je marchais sur le toit de tôle de la grange au désespoir de ma mère. Au fil des ans, j’en suis venu à voir dans ce matériau de l’humilité et de la force. J’ai choisi ce morceau en particulier pour le goudron que j’y ai jadis appliqué.

Question : You’re presenting us with a piece of sheet metal. Everyone will understand that you want to communicate a feeling of nostalgia. Can you explain how this work fits into your body of work?

Me : It’s a piece of sheet metal from an old building in the Laurentian forest. It bears the imprint of the men who made it, then nailed it down and un-nailed it again and again. It also bears the story of its relationship with time and nature, which have transformed it, giving it magnificent dents and colours. I chose it as a representative work of my approach to simplification and sobriety of means in making a pictorial work.

Question: You evoke the beauty of imperfection, the power of nature and the passage of time. But how do you come to see this object as a work of art?

Me : First of all, my intention is clear. I’m presenting a work that has inimitable aesthetic qualities and I’m proposing a reflection on the creative force of nature.
The agent of creation here is nature which, like an alchemist, has transformed an industrial metal object into its original components extracted from the earth. Over several decades, the elements – sun, rain and snow – have created these ochres and browns. The forest, falling trees and snapping branches are the source of the dents. For this painting, I abandon my ambitions as a painter and bow to the creative force of nature.
As a child, I used to walk on the tin roof of the barn, to my mother’s despair. Over the years, I came to love this material for its attributes of humility and strength. I chose this particular piece because of the tar I once applied to it.
